Research from specialists at KU Leuven shows that popular wallet extensions may allow third parties to associate multiple accounts with one user, track website activity and connect traditional online behavior with cryptocurrency holdings. The issue affects millions of users because browser wallets operate not only as transaction tools but also as active components inside the internet ecosystem. Network requests, permissions and website interactions can create a digital fingerprint that links anonymous blockchain activity with a real online identity.

Cryptocurrency privacy is weaker than many users believe

Blockchain addresses are often described as pseudonymous. A wallet does not directly contain a person’s name, passport details or email address. However, pseudonymity does not mean complete anonymity.
A public address is only one piece of information. The surrounding digital environment can reveal additional clues: where the user connects from, which websites they visit, which decentralized applications they use and how different wallets interact with the same services.

Browser extensions create another layer of complexity. Unlike hardware wallets, they operate directly inside the browser, the same environment where users read news, shop online, communicate and manage personal accounts.
This creates a potential bridge between cryptocurrency activity and everyday internet behavior.

35 million users may carry a hidden digital identifier

Researchers analyzed 85 cryptocurrency wallet extensions available through the Chrome ecosystem. Together, these extensions represented an audience of more than 35 million users.

The study examined several technical areas:
network requests made by wallet extensions;
permission systems;
interaction with Ethereum-based applications;
communication between websites and wallet interfaces.

The researchers identified five major privacy risks. These risks were not limited to a single vulnerability. Instead, they resulted from how browser wallets, websites and third-party services interact.
The main concern is that a wallet address can become an identifier.
Once connected to blockchain data, an address may expose balances, transaction history, token ownership and interaction patterns. When combined with external information, this can transform a supposedly anonymous wallet into a traceable profile.

Network traffic can reveal more than the wallet itself

One of the discovered risks appears during routine wallet operations.
When a user checks a balance or transaction history, the wallet may send requests containing public blockchain addresses to external services. The address itself is already visible on the blockchain, but the timing and structure of network communication can create additional signals.

Researchers found that some wallets could allow observers to determine whether several addresses likely belong to the same person.
This changes the privacy equation.
A user may believe that separating funds between several wallets improves anonymity. However, if these wallets communicate with services in a recognizable pattern, the separation can become ineffective.
The problem is not the blockchain address alone. The problem is the digital trail created around it.

Browser fingerprints create another tracking channel

Another significant issue is wallet detection.
Some websites can identify installed wallet extensions or recognize combinations of browser wallets. This creates a unique configuration pattern — similar to a digital fingerprint.

Traditional tracking methods often rely on cookies or advertising identifiers. However, browser wallet fingerprints can survive even when users delete cookies or clear website data.
According to the research, dozens of wallet extensions exposed information that could help websites identify visitors based on their installed wallet environment.
For cryptocurrency users, this creates a new privacy risk: the browser itself becomes a source of identification.

Permissions can remain active after users leave websites

Modern web applications frequently request access to wallet interfaces. These permissions allow decentralized applications to connect with wallets and request account information.
The problem appears when access is not properly revoked.
Researchers found cases where wallet permissions remained active after users believed they had disconnected from an application. This creates the possibility that previously visited websites may continue recognizing wallet addresses during future sessions.

A user may think: “I closed the application, so the connection disappeared.”

Technically, this may not always be true.
Persistent permissions can allow different sessions, accounts or applications to become connected through the same wallet identity.

Advertising trackers can connect crypto activity with personal data
The most concerning scenario involves ordinary websites that have no direct connection to cryptocurrency.
Researchers demonstrated that advertising or analytics code could potentially obtain wallet information through embedded website elements. A user visiting a regular website may unknowingly expose information about a cryptocurrency wallet installed in the browser.

Once an address becomes available, third parties can analyze public blockchain information:
wallet balance;
transaction history;
token ownership;
decentralized application usage.

This information can then potentially be combined with traditional digital records:
browsing behavior;
online purchases;
email accounts;
search activity;
phone numbers.

The result is a detailed behavioral profile created without stealing private keys or making unauthorized transactions.

Why browser wallets face a structural privacy challenge

The issue is broader than individual mistakes by developers.
Browser wallets are designed to provide convenience. They allow users to interact with decentralized finance platforms, NFT marketplaces and Web3 applications directly from a browser.

However, convenience requires communication between multiple systems:
wallet extensions;
websites;
blockchain nodes;
analytics services;
third-party providers.

Every additional connection creates another potential information channel.
The challenge is finding a balance between usability and privacy.

How the ecosystem can improve protection

Researchers suggest several technical solutions:
First, wallets should avoid combining multiple addresses inside the same network request when this information is unnecessary.
Second, permission systems should have stronger expiration rules. Users should regularly approve access instead of allowing indefinite connections.
Third, wallet interfaces should only be available to the main website context and avoid exposure through embedded third-party components.

Applications should also implement proper logout mechanisms that actually revoke access rather than only changing the visible interface.

What cryptocurrency users can do today

Users cannot completely eliminate all privacy risks, but they can reduce exposure.

Basic security practices include:
reviewing connected applications regularly;
removing unused wallet permissions;
separating wallets for different purposes;
avoiding unnecessary wallet connections;
using dedicated browser profiles for cryptocurrency activity.

The key principle is simple: a wallet address is public information, but the digital environment around that address can reveal much more.
The biggest privacy risk in modern cryptocurrency is not always the blockchain itself. The larger problem is the growing connection between blockchain identity and everyday internet activity.
A wallet extension is not just a tool for signing transactions. It is a piece of software operating inside a browser that already knows a great deal about user behavior.
As crypto adoption grows, privacy protection will depend not only on cryptographic technology but also on better browser architecture, permission management and responsible development practices.
