The legal storm surrounding Netflix’s "The Rip", produced by Artists Equity - a company co-founded by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck - has brought Hollywood under scrutiny once again. The lawsuit, filed by two former Miami-Dade police officers involved in a real-life 2016 drug bust, accuses the filmmakers of defamation and misrepresentation. According to the plaintiffs, the movie tarnished their reputations by portraying them as corrupt officers.
Released in January 2026, The Rip dramatizes the true story of an operation targeting Luis Hernandez-Gonzalez, a Miami-based drug trafficker. During the raid, police uncovered millions of dollars hidden in dozens of five-gallon buckets at Hernandez-Gonzalez’s Miami Lakes residence. The total haul amounted to approximately $21 million, making it one of the largest cash seizures in local history.

However, the lawsuit claims that the film takes creative liberties that cast the officers involved in a negative light. In the movie, Damon and Affleck portray Lieutenant Dane Dumars and Detective JD Byrne, two fictionalized detectives whose trust in each other erodes after discovering the money. The plot suggests internal corruption among the officers, with characters accusing one another of attempting to steal the seized funds.

For Jonathan Santana, one of the two real-life officers involved in the case and now Deputy Sheriff of Miami-Dade County, the film’s release has brought unwelcome attention. Santana claims colleagues and peers have mocked him over what he perceives as an unfair depiction of the team that worked on the original investigation.
“They portrayed my clients in a bad light, and now their reputations are damaged,” said Ignacio Alvarez, Santana’s attorney, in an interview with 7News. “This wasn’t just careless storytelling - it was reckless.”
Santana, along with Jason Smith, another officer who participated in the 2016 operation, alleges that Artists Equity failed to consult them during the filmmaking process. Instead, the production team reportedly sought details about the case from a different officer who had no direct involvement in the raid.

“They should have hired us as consultants,” Santana told 7News. “We were there. We know what happened. Instead, they went to someone else and got it wrong.”
The lawsuit argues that the filmmakers’ decision not only misrepresented the events but also defamed the officers by implying unethical behavior. Both Santana and Smith insist they acted with integrity throughout the operation and deserve recognition for their work rather than being painted as potential criminals on screen.
While "The Rip" has been praised for its gripping narrative and performances by Damon and Affleck, this legal challenge raises questions about the responsibilities of filmmakers when adapting real-life stories. Critics argue that while artistic license is essential for storytelling, it must be balanced against the impact such portrayals can have on individuals’ lives.
As the controversy unfolds, all eyes are on Artists Equity and how they will respond to these allegations. Will this high-profile lawsuit set a precedent for future biographical films? Or will it serve as a cautionary tale for producers navigating sensitive subject matter?
