AI-driven bots — once niche tools built by technically savvy resellers — have evolved into autonomous agents capable of mimicking human behavior with remarkable precision.

This year marked the first time, according to Imperva (US, October 2025), when bot traffic surpassed human traffic on major retail sites, with malicious bots accounting for roughly 33% of all activity and over 500,000 automated attacks daily.

For retailers across the US, EU and Asia, this signals a structural problem: traditional anti-bot filters no longer differentiate humans from machines. And for consumers, the consequences are immediate — limited-stock goods disappear in seconds, not hours.

• spoofing device fingerprints to pass heuristic bot-detection
• simulating cursor paths, scroll depth and micro-delays

The result is a machine that behaves like a statistically perfect shopper — never hesitating, never mistyping, never slowing down.

Retailers, from US marketplaces to Asian electronics stores, typically detect anomalies only after the entire high-demand stock — game consoles, GPUs, smart toys — has already been wiped out. In many cases, “grinch bots” instantly resell these items on secondary markets, inflating prices by 50–300%.

The Account Hijacking Wave: A More Dangerous Front

The escalation doesn’t end with product hoarding.
A second, more financially damaging pattern has emerged: AI-, where bots test leaked passwords against retail platforms at industrial scale.

This threat grows during major sales events — Black Friday, Cyber Monday, 11.11 — when consumers create new accounts and repeat familiar passwords.

In short: the tools designed to help people compete with bots are themselves becoming attack vectors.

The Human Factor: Why Small Mistakes Become Catastrophic

Autonomous browsing tools bring real convenience — but they also remove the protective friction of human decision-making.
An AI agent that misinterprets a hidden instruction may:

• auto-fill saved passwords
• complete a purchase without confirmation
• authorize a saved card for fraudulent charges
• disclose private data via compromised forms

Security researchers warn that these models are still too unpredictable to safely manage payments or personal data during high-traffic events.

The Global Retail Impact: From Supply Shortages to Market Distortion

As machines dominate selection and purchase flows, retail markets experience several macro-level effects:

1. Artificial scarcity
Shortages arise not from overwhelming human demand but from automated hoarding.

2. Price inflation on secondary markets
AI bots feed resellers, distorting market prices for weeks or months.

3. Customer distrust and abandonment
US and EU surveys show rising frustration with “insta-sellout” events.

4. Increased operational risk
Retailers must invest heavily into:

• traffic behavior modeling.

This increases cost for platforms — and ultimately, for consumers.

Staying Safe: Practical Measures That Still Work

Despite

AI bots define availability, pricing, and even access to user accounts — reshaping global e-commerce far faster than regulators or retailers can adapt.

While protective AI agents may help, they also introduce new vulnerabilities.
In a world where half the traffic is automated, digital hygiene becomes the key survival skill for modern shoppers, and retailers must rethink cybersecurity as the foundation of customer trust.
